The Chan Gallery is pleased to announce Not Yet, a solo exhibition featuring works by Pearl C. Hsiung. As our visiting professor of painting, Hsiung taught Painting I and Topics in Contemporary Painting last fall and will teach Painting I and a new course that she designed called Advanced and Expanded Painting this spring at 禁漫天堂. Please join us for the artist鈥檚 reception on Tuesday, January 31st, from 3-5 pm.
鈥淣ot Yet features two paintings, They (Gomukh II), 2022, a wall painting on canvas, and Themses, 2019, a large-scale free-standing work. Both feature glacial landscapes that differ in their imaging approach yet pose similar questions regarding the sustainability of the landscape as an aesthetic genre, conceptual site, or physical space. In this discourse, Not Yet asks us to think about the interdependence of land, human, and the more-than-human in this ecological moment. Both the title and exhibition work limn the continual emergence and refusal of arrival that flow through current conditions, consequences, and urgencies.鈥

Biography
Pearl C. Hsiung received her B.A. from UCLA and MFA from Goldsmiths in London. Hsiung鈥檚 exhibitions include solos at Visitor Welcome Center (2019, 2017), Vincent Price Art Museum in Los Angeles (2011), and Steve Turner Contemporary (2010, 2007) in Los Angeles; Max Wigram Gallery, London, (2006, 2004); and Upriver Gallery in Kunming, China (2004). Her work has been included in group exhibits such as The Beyond; Georgia O鈥橩eeffe and Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Crystal Bridges Museum of Art (2018-19); New Suns, P谩ramo Gallery, Guadalajara, Mexico (2019); Made in L.A. 2012, Hammer Museum; Acclimatation, The Centre National d鈥檃rt Contemporain, Villa Arson, Nice (2008); California Biennial 2006, Orange County Museum of Art; Busan Biennale 2006, Museum of Modern Art, Busan South Korea; and Expander, Royal Academy of Arts, London (2004). In 2015, She received a CCF Fellowship for Visual Arts, Getty Fellow, Mid-Career Artist grant.
Pearl C. Hsiung is currently working on a large-scale glass mosaic mural commissioned by LA Metro. 鈥淗igh Prismatic鈥 will be located at the Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill station in DTLA and will open in 2023.
